Taraval Stained Glass Removal

We have brought the beautiful Taraval stained glass windows to Brotherhood Way!

During the week of January 15, 2024, stained glass experts removed the 35 stained glass panels that had long graced Congregation B'nai Emunah at 3595 Taraval Street. Twenty-one of the panes had been installed when the building opened as a synagogue in 1976. In 1977, many were shattered during a clash with the owners of a Nazi bookstore that had opened across the street. The near riot that ensued made the news and donations poured in from around the world to repair/replace the windows. Fourteen more panes were installed in 1980 on the opposite wall and were dedicated to Sir Horace Kadoorie, who had built the school that the Jewish refugees in Shanghai attended during World War II. Many of the founding members of B'nai Emunah attended that school and were forever grateful. Sir Kadoorie attended the window dedication. The windows portray scenes from Jerusalem and were handcrafted by a studio in Burlingame.

The windows were carefully removed, repaired and then transported to Brotherhood Way. There they were crated for safekeeping.

They will be kept securely as we consider our options, but the most important thing was to ensure their continued presence in the Am Tikvah community. Stay tuned for news of the windows' next incarnation!
